This blog is a forum for the students of Sam Nekrosius's University of Chicago Lab School seventh grade humanities classes. We will use this space to discuss and explore issues that arise in class; students should also feel welcome to post occasional questions for their teacher and each other if they wish to do so.

I have to say, I really like this town hall debate format--there have been a couple of moments where it has seemed like both candidates have talked to each other and to the audience rather than just giving speeches (though there's been some of that, as well). I feel for the audience members asking the questions--they're clearly really nervous, as I would be!

I am going to say what I have said in all of my blog posts before. Mitt Romney is just contradicting himself and not answering the question. I want to know the numbers on his tax plan! The one thing that I wish Obama had done was to answer the question about why he didn't enforce immigration legislation in his first year. The format is better than past formats. The moderator is striking a wonderful balance between total control and powerlessness. The questions are very good and they come from real people with real jobs. Also, Obama wore a red tie and Romney a blue one. Why is that? Are they trying to promote bipartisanship or are they just trying to seem less partisan? I am excited to see the polls after this.

I did not watch much of the debate (homework) but something that I found was that Governor Romney was forceful and made the president answer his question. President Obama was a little "nice" on Governor Romney and had many times where he could have made really good points. They stuck with red and blue ties which shows that they are proud and trying to show that they are very republican or very democratic. Governor Romney also made a point that was factually incorrect. Romney said that President Obama did not say that the attack on the ambassador was terrorist attack even though the President said that. It also seems that Mitt Romney is saying that he is going to do everything that everybody wants do even though that is impossible.
